ALOR SETAR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) will lead the ASEAN Student Mobility Programme in conjunction with the ASEAN Universities Exhibition and Forum 2025 (AEF2025), which will take place in Petaling Jaya on Feb 24 and 25.

UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan said the programme, organised through the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), aims to strengthen educational collaboration, foster cross-border academic partnerships and enrich cultural exchanges among ASEAN students in line with regional integration aspirations.

According to him, the programme officially began online on Feb 11 with the ASEAN Young Talent Speaker Contest, a public speaking competition involving students from ASEAN universities, providing a platform for discussions on critical regional issues.

"This inaugural ASEAN Student Mobility Programme will bring together 500 students from various universities across ASEAN. It offers a dynamic mix of academic activities, innovation and cross-cultural exposure," he said in a statement today.

From Feb 19 to 23, students will be placed at 13 universities nationwide to gain insights into Malaysia’s higher education landscape and cultural diversity while exploring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the ASEAN Future Innovators Challenge.

"By promoting student mobility across ASEAN, the programme will strengthen ties between higher education institutions and produce the next generation of ASEAN leaders among university students," he said.

Mohd Foad added that the initiative also serves as a dynamic platform for students to engage with pressing regional and global issues through academic exchanges, innovation exhibitions and leadership dialogues.

"It also provides opportunities to exchange knowledge, establish networks and develop solutions that contribute to a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable ASEAN," he said.

The chairman of the ASEAN Student Mobility Programme 2025, Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, who is also deputy vice-chancellor (academic and international), said the programme reflects ASEAN’s shift from a nation-centric model to one that emphasises people-to-people cooperation.

"It is aimed at fostering direct interaction among individuals and institutions," he said.
