KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- Dr. P. Vellapandian has been appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of the National Sports Institute (NSI), effective today.
He replaces Ahmad Faedzal Md Ramli whose term of service ended yesterday, after assuming the position on Feb 25, 2019.
The announcement of the appointment was made by NSI Board chairman Datuk Marina Chin at NSI, Bukit Jalil here.
Meanwhile, in a media conference here, Marina said his selection was through an open process with anyone able to submit an application to fill the vacant position.
"Dr. Vellapandian brings over two decades of experience in the fields of sports science, sports psychology, research and development of athlete performance.
"His expertise in the development of high-performance athletes, sports psychology, and management of elite sports programmes will contribute to driving NSI to a higher level in support of the excellence of national sports," she said.
Vellapandian, 56, previously served as CEO of the Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES) under the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), and has held various important positions at NSI including director of the Sports Performance Division and head of the Podium Programme.
He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sports Psychology from the University of Western Australia as well as a master's and bachelor's degree in sports science from local universities.
