LANGKAWI, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- The public is invited to visit the National Art Gallery (BSN) in Langkawi and immerse themselves in the beauty of botanical illustrations that blend elements of art, science and nature.

Langkawi National Art Gallery director Zaslan Zeeha Zainee said each artwork is not merely a visual representation of the beauty of botanical life but also meticulously details their form, structure, and unique characteristics, including leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.

“BSN Langkawi kicks off 2025 with the botanical illustration programme, ‘Rasa Alam’, an initiative that integrates art, science and technology within the context of nature.

“This eight-day programme which began on Feb 19, highlights Langkawi’s rich biodiversity and focuses on native flora that is not only part of the ecosystem but also a cultural heritage of the local community,” he told reporters during a preview session of the botanical illustration artworks at BSN, here today.

A total of 28 artworks, including 24 botanical illustrations on paper, two sculptures, and two augmented reality (AR) animations will be exhibited at BSN from today until July 31.

“Fourteen guest artists were involved in creating these botanical illustrations, drawing inspiration from direct observations at Lubuk Semilang Recreational Park and the rainforest trail in Ayer Hangat,” he said.

The participating artists are Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Dr Zaimie Sahibil, Dr Hushinaidi Abdul Hamid, Dr Zainuddin Abidinhazir @ Abd. Rashid, Zaharuddin Sarbini, Jamal Tumiran, Hashim Man, Rohaizad Shaari, M. Aminuddin Osman, Leong Sok Yeng, Yeo Eng Peng, Mohammad Shahrin Shaari, Syahrudin Ishak and Abu Shukran Md Salleh.

Beyond their artistic contributions, the artists also shared their knowledge and perspectives, making the programme not just an artistic exploration but also an educational platform that enriches the understanding of human-nature connections.

“This exhibition is not just about appreciating botanical illustration but also offers an immersive experience, inviting visitors to connect with nature, not only visually but also through a deeper understanding of Langkawi’s flora and its role in everyday life,” he said.

Additionally, he said the exhibition also serves as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthening awareness of biodiversity conservation and the importance of flora in both the ecosystem and cultural heritage.
