BUENOS AIRES, March 9 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- The death toll from the devastating storm that struck the southern Argentine port city of Bahia Blanca on Friday has risen to 13, Xinhua reported, quoting local authorities on Saturday.

They also warned that the number could increase as rescue operations continue.

The storm triggered severe flooding, leading to the shutdown of the city and surrounding areas. At least 1,059 people have been evacuated, and floodwaters inundated Dr. Jose Penna General Hospital, forcing staff to relocate patients, including newborns, to safer areas.

The Argentine government has deployed emergency crews, with national and provincial officials coordinating relief efforts.

"We have to rebuild the city," said Buenos Aires Province Government Minister Carlos Bianco. "Some people lost everything."

Officials said the storm dumped 11.8 to 13.8 inches of rain in just hours – the heaviest downpour in the city's history – breaking a record set in 1933.
