UTP Programmes Achieve Global Top Rankings In QS World University Rankings By Subject 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) continues to strengthen its global reputation, ranking 184th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 for Broad Subject: Engineering and Technology.

This achievement reinforces UTP’s position as the region’s leading private university in the field.

In a statement, UTP highlighted that its excellence is particularly evident in Petroleum Engineering, where it ranks 16th globally, placing it among the world's top 20 universities.

“This milestone further solidifies UTP’s standing as a premier institution for energy and resource-related education and research. The university’s engineering strengths extend across multiple disciplines; Mineral and Mining Engineering in the 51-100 band and Chemical Engineering in the 101-150 band,” the statement said.

The statement also mentioned that UTP’s Civil Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering programmes are ranked in the 151-200 band, Mechanical Engineering in the 201-250 band, and the university’s Computer Science and Information System programme in the 301-350 band globally.

“Beyond Engineering and Technology, UTP has also gained recognition in Broad Subject: Natural Science, ranking 362nd worldwide. In this category, the university’s Chemistry programme is ranked in the 301-350 band, Physics in the 351-400 band, and Materials Science in the 251-300 band.

“Meanwhile, Business and Management Studies ranks in the 501-550 band,” it added.

UTP Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib highlighted that the university’s sustained excellence in global subject rankings reflects its dedication to cutting-edge research, an industry-driven curriculum and graduate employability.

“Our Petroleum Engineering program remains globally renowned, consistently ranked among the best in the world alongside institutions like Colorado School of Mines, King Abdullah University of Science & Technology and The University of Queensland.

“This excellence is driven by our distinguished faculty, cutting-edge facilities, and strong collaborations with industry leaders. We will continue pushing the boundaries of education, contributing to technological advancements and sustainable solutions that address global challenges,” he said.

These accomplishments underscore UTP’s role as a research-intensive university committed to producing industry-ready graduates and pioneering advancements that shape the future of engineering, technology, and science.
