Paetongtarn Accepts Court Ruling, Reaffirms Dedication to the Nation

BANGKOK, July 1 (Bernama) -- Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has humbly accepted the Constitutional Court’s decision to suspend her from duty as prime minister, pending deliberation of a case involving a controversial leaked phone call with Cambodia’s leader, Hun Sen.

In her immediate reaction, Paetongtarn emphasised that her genuine intention was to serve the nation and not for personal gain, regarding the issue surrounding the leaked audio clip.

"I will strive to prove that my actions were rooted in genuine intent and tireless effort, exceeding 100 per cent, to truly serve the nation, protect our sovereignty, safeguard the lives of our armed forces and soldiers, and ensure peace in our country," she told reporters at the Government House on Tuesday.

Paetongtarn said she would use the next 15 days to clarify her intentions regarding the phone conversation with Hun Sen.

"During this period of suspension, I reaffirm my dedication to working for the nation with all my strength and determination," she said.

She also expressed gratitude to those who had sent messages of support and apologised to her fellow Thais for any distress or anger caused by the issue.

Earlier on Tuesday, Thailand’s Constitutional Court suspended Paetongtarn from duty while it deliberates a petition filed by 36 senators accusing her of dishonesty and breaching ethical standards, in violation of the constitution.

In a statement, the court said it had accepted the petition for consideration, noting that the Prime Minister had 15 days to submit a defence.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Jungrungreangkit will assume the role of acting prime minister while the court decides the case against Paetongtarn.

Paetongtarn, the 38-year-old leader of the Pheu Thai Party and daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was appointed in August last year, becoming Thailand's youngest and second female prime minister after securing a parliamentary vote.
