KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- The chairman of Tabung Haji's board of directors, Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain, has been appointed as the 10th International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) president for three years, effective today.
The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) said in a statement that Abdul Rashid is replacing Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, whose term as the ninth IIUM president has ended, adding that IIUM Constitutional Head Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah approved the appointment.
Abdul Rashid, founder of the Rashid Hussain Berhad (RHB) Banking Group, was appointed to the IIUM board of governors in 2018 and has been serving as pro-chancellor of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) since last year.
According to the MOHE, Abdul Rashid was appointed based on his credibility in the corporate sector, particularly in Islamic finance.
“The ministry is confident that Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain’s appointment will further consolidate IIUM’s role as a centre of academic excellence grounded in Islamic values, while enhancing its visibility and competitiveness at national and international levels.
“The ministry would like to express its deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Tan Sri Samsudin Osman for his contributions and services,” read the statement.
