Ex-Kedah Keeper Azmi Proves His Mettle On The Green

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- Former Kedah goalkeeper Mohd Azmi Mahmud has proven he's just as capable on the golf course, finishing runner-up in the second leg of the qualifying round to earn a spot in the World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC) Malaysia National Finals.

During the match held at the Tropicana Golf & Country Club in Petaling Jaya recently, single-handicapper Mohd Azmi and his partner Azhar Husain were among the top five winners who qualified for the national finals.

“After retiring from football, I took up golf as a part-time sport but soon got hooked on it. We were in a tough field with many good players and are glad that we qualified for the national finals,” said Mohd Azmi in a statement.

Following on the success of the opening leg last month, the competition was keenly contested, with the top five teams in the Two Ball Best Ball Stableford contest securing their spots in September's national finals at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.

In the tournament, which featured a houseful participation from corporate companies, entrepreneurs, business leaders and professionals, single-handicapper Tay Cher Haw and his partner Liew Vin Sern of Seng Haw Timber Sdn Bhd emerged clear winners, returning a combined Stableford score of 49 points.

Three points behind in second spot, on 46 points, were the pair of Mohd Azmi and Azhar, representing MG Synergy.

The Widad Skycore (M) Sdn Bhd team of Isyraf Widad Muhammad Ikmal Opat and Mohd Adib Ibrahim combined for a score of 45 points to finish third on countback, ahead of Muhammad Feyyaz and Amirul Adli Senu from Feyyaz Sports Group. 

The final pair to advance to the national finals was the partnership of Muhammad Firdaus Said and Mohd Azwan of Sinar Jernih Sdn Bhd, who also returned a score of 45 points.

The winning team at the national finals will represent Malaysia at the WCGC World Final, which will be played at the PGA Anying Golf Club in Shanghai from Oct 19-23.
