KUCHING, July 2 (Bernama) -- Sarawak must explore new markets such as Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America to diversify beyond its traditional trade partners, said the state's Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He said this approach will open up new opportunities and reduce the risks associated with over-reliance on specific markets.
“We must strengthen collaborations with industrial players, trade promotional agencies and global distributors. These strategic partnerships will unlock access to retail markets, enhance brand visibility and establish a wider global footprint for Sarawak brands,” he said in his speech during the launch of Sarawak Export Day 2025 here today.
Awang Tengah, who is also Sarawak Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, said technology plays a crucial role in helping businesses compete globally.
He said companies must embrace digital platforms, artificial intelligence (AI) driven insights and blockchain to enhance competitiveness, transparency and access to global buyers.
“Today’s global buyers are looking beyond price and quality. They want sustainability. This growing demand is fuelled by a change in consumer behaviour.
“As such, exporters must meet stringent international standards that incorporate sustainable practices,” he said.
Awang Tengah added that his ministry works closely with exporters to navigate regulatory changes, participate in trade missions and gain international exposure.
“Our trade offices in Singapore, Brunei and soon a new office in Pontianak, Indonesia, are key entry points for Sarawak-made products and services to access and expand into regional markets and beyond,” he said.
