Strategic Actions Essential to Build Modern, Professional Police Force - Lee Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Bernama) -- Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said steps must be taken to modernise the police force to meet evolving security threats, especially in the face of increasingly sophisticated crimes and rising public expectations.

He said a modern police force must not only be professional and efficient but also grounded in integrity, transparency, and genuine care for its personnel to remain effective and trustworthy.

"Law enforcement must keep pace with new forms of crime. including cybercrime, financial fraud and transnational threats. This requires constant investment in advanced forensic tools, AI-powered crime analysis, body-worn cameras and digital infrastructure," he said in a statement today.

Lee stressed that public trust in the police can only be earned through exemplary conduct, and he called for the strengthening of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC), the institutionalisation of transparent investigations and a zero-tolerance policy on corruption.

He also urged stronger community engagement through initiatives such as community policing and open dialogues, noting that closer cooperation between the police and civil society could help bridge gaps and foster mutual trust.

"A professional force is one where personnel are respected, well-treated and cared for," he said, adding that better working conditions, fair promotion systems, mental health support, and proper housing must be prioritised to prevent burnout and low morale.

Lee also proposed reforms in recruitment and promotion practices that emphasise merit and character, and he called for stronger public feedback mechanisms as a means to safeguard the integrity of the police force and the rights of the people.
