KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- The dream of seeing the national sepak takraw squad end its 34-year championship drought in the team regu was shattered after they lost to traditional rivals, Thailand, 0-2 in the final of the 2025 Thai King's Cup today.
In the final at the Central Hatyai shopping mall, Songkhla, Ahmad Jais Baharun's men once again failed to break the dominance of the Gajah Putih squad that has continued to haunt the country's sepak takraw for the past three decades.
The last time Malaysia lifted the team regu championship was at the 1991 Manila SEA Games before the wait continued to lengthen every time they met Thailand.
Earlier, Malaysia’s combination of Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin, Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam and Norfaizzul Abd Razak, failed to give the country its first point when they lost 0-2 (12-15, 12-15).
The second regu, consisting of Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi, Mohammad Azlan Alias and Farhan Adam also failed to extend the battle after losing the first set 16-17, before being trounced 4-15 by the Thai trio, Siriwat Sakha, Thawisak Thongsai and Rachan Viphan.
