SIBU, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- The MADANI Adopted Village programme is not only a physical development initiative but also focuses on empowering communities to become agents of unity.
National Unity Minister Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang said the programme can significantly improve the socio-economic status of village residents.
Speaking at the opening of the MADANI Adopted Village programme in Kampung Sungai Balingiau at Rumah Awin Bajeng, Kanowit today, he said the initiative is based on the Malaysia MADANI principles, which emphasise well-being, sustainability, and inclusiveness.
“Up to 43 villages have benefited from the programme in 2024. For 2025, the government aims to expand the programme to 200 villages with a budget allocation of RM200 million, allowing a maximum of RM1 million for each village,” he said.
Aaron said Kampung Sungai Balingiau was selected for its potential to serve as a model for rural community development in a holistic and integrated manner.
Several key projects have been implemented in the village, including the installation of a MADANI Adopted Village signboard, upgrading the entrance road to Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Balingiau, and enhancing the footpath at the school.
Other improvements include upgrading the main entrance roads to Rumah Sandai and Rumah Awin, constructing public toilets at both longhouses, and upgrading the iron bridge to Rumah Awin.
Additionally, the futsal court at Rumah Panjang Lika is being refurbished, and community programmes are being organised with local residents.
The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Aaron, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kanowit, urged the villagers to take an active role once the project is completed. This includes maintaining public facilities, engaging in community activities, supporting government programmes, and fostering unity at the grassroots level.
