KOTA BHARU, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Customs Department seized various contraband worth RM50.2 million involving 958 cases in the first eight months of this year.
Its director, Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long, said of the smuggled goods, drugs had the highest seizure value at RM21.3 million, with 27 cases, followed by cigarettes worth RM2.19 million involving 133 cases, and frozen chicken valued at RM2.11 million across 16 cases.
"During the same period, a total of 27 drug cases were recorded with a value of RM21.3 million, compared to only 12 cases worth RM1,601 last year. This represents a 99.5 per cent increase.
"In fact, on Aug 19, we successfully made the largest drug seizure to date, involving suspected syabu valued over RM8.9 million at Kampung Banggol Kulim, Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he told reporters at a press conference at the Customs Enforcement Office here today.
Wan Jamal urged the public to help the Customs combat smuggling activities, especially those involving drugs, cigarettes, liquor and other illicit goods, as they not only cause national revenue losses but also threaten public safety and well-being.
The public is encouraged to report any smuggling activities by contacting the Customs toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-8855 or reaching out to the nearest Customs office. The identities of informants will remain anonymous.
