BANGKOK, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will undertake an official visit to Malaysia and attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and related Summits from Oct 25 to 28.

This will be his first visit to Malaysia, and the second official overseas visit since holding office on Sept 7.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat said the visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, underscores the importance of Malaysia as a close neighbour with shared interests and interlinked prosperity.

“During the visit, both prime ministers will hold bilateral discussions to strengthen cooperation for mutual benefit, particularly in promoting cross-border connectivity in transport, enhancing trade and investment, boosting tourism, addressing transboundary challenges, and fostering people-to-people relations,” he said in a statement here on Wednesday.

Siripong added that at the Summit, Anutin will emphasise four key priorities: promoting peace and stability in the region; building a secure and resilient ASEAN Community; driving inclusive economic growth; and advancing transformation towards sustainability.

“This visit presents an important opportunity to strengthen relations and cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia, particularly in the areas of border security and economic development. It also serves as a platform to enhance regional cooperation within the ASEAN framework,” he said.

The Thai prime minister will also hold discussions with key leaders under the ASEAN framework, including those from the United States, China, Japan, and India, as well as bilateral meetings with several other world leaders on the sidelines of the Summit.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, themed ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, is scheduled to be held from Oct 26 to 28, with participation from more than 20 prominent world leaders, including those from the 10 ASEAN member states and key external dialogue partners from the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

The summit is expected to be the largest in its history since the first one was held in 1976.
