KBS To Intensify Women's Golf Development To Nurture More Talented Players

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is intensifying efforts to develop women’s golf with the support of the Malaysian Ladies Golf Association (MALGA), including preparing funds for organising golf clinics for students.

Its minister, Hannah Yeoh said the measure was among the contiuous government initiatives in ensuring golf, especially among women, continues to develop and nurtures more players with high potential.

“Now we have many development programmes to support MALGA and we have allocation funds for them to conduct clinics with students.

“We have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Subang National Golf Club to ensure Malaysian golfers who want to compete, who want to train, can use the facilities with a discount,” she told reporters when met at the 2025 Maybank Golf Championship here today.

On the drop in prize money for the local tournament after the COVID-19 pandemic, Hannah said it depended heavily on private sector sponsorship, and urged more government-linked companies to invest in sports.

“Prize money depends a lot on sponsorship, … if you don’t have Maybank investing into this, we won’t have results like this. That’s why companies need to play their role, but they also want to see that their support for a programme is worthwhile,” she added.

Hannah also expressed pride in the achievements of the five Malaysian women who played in the 2025 Maybank Championship, especially Mirabel Ting, who put on an excellent performance in her debut as a professional golfer.

The other four Malaysian women who played were Kelly Tan, Genevieve Ling, Ashley Lau and Liyana Durisic.
