Flood Victims Rise In Sarawak, Johor Sees Minor Decrease

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- The number of flood victims at temporary relief centres in Sarawak increased this morning, while in Johor, the figure saw a slight decrease.

In SARAWAK the total number of victims rose to 1,136 from 286 families as of 8 am today, up from 791 people yesterday.

According to the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), 252 individuals from 52 families are sheltering at the Dewan R-Piang relief centre in Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kuching, with the remainder spread across eight other centress.

The affected areas in Sarawak include Taman Desa Wira, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kampung Sungai Batu, Kampung Surih Iban, Taman Malihah, Kampung Tengah Sungai, and Kampung Rantau Panjang in the Kuching region.

In Kota Samarahan, Kampung Plaie is also affected, while in Lawas, the flood has impacted Kampung Siang Siang.

Meanwhile, in JOHOR, the number of victims in Segamat dropped slightly to 134 individuals from 36 families as of 8 am today, down from 136 people yesterday.

In a statement, Johor JPBN chairman, Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman said all victims are being accommodated in five relief centres.

Of these, 40 victims are taking shelter at Balai Raya Kampung Batu Badak, Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Tasek (18),  Balai Raya Kampung Sanglang (14), Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Tandong (39), and Balai Raya Kampung Paya (23).

Asman Shah also reported that two rivers in Segamat have surpassed dangerous levels - Sungai Muar at Buloh Kasap has reached a height of 9.11 metres (m), while Jeti Sungai Tekam recorded 4.04 m.

In addition, two roads have been fully closed due to flood damage - Jalan Felda Tenggaroh 3 in Mersing, due to a landslide, and the Kesang-Sungai Rambai Bridge in Tangkak, which was damaged by the floodwaters.
