BACHOK, Jan 25 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) is in the midst of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into higher education without compromising human values and ethics, to align with its five-year digital transformation agenda.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Arham Abdullah said the university has been integrating AI-related components into all its courses since last year.

He emphasised that the goal is for students to become not just technologically adept, but also ethical and responsible users of AI.

“To safeguard ethical standards, UMK established guidelines and an ethical framework for the use of digital technology, including applications like ChatGPT in the learning process, as early as 2020,” he said at a media briefing after the launch of the UMK Strategic Plan 2026-2030 (UMK30) at the Bachok Campus today.

He added that the university has appointed a chief digital officer to spearhead the implementation of its digital transformation in a more aggressive and structured manner.

Furthermore, the library management has also been directly involved to ensure the digitisation process can be executed in a comprehensive and integrated way.

He explained that a comprehensive digital framework has been developed, covering AI, Big Data, Cloud Computing, and other current information technologies, forming the foundation for the university's medium and long-term planning.

“This digital transformation is not solely focused on academic aspects but also involves campus management and security. For instance, UMK plans to use specific algorithms to enhance the efficiency of security monitoring systems, including the use of CCTV,” he said.

He said that these initiatives would be implemented in phases over the next five years, ensuring the university's digital transformation is sustainable, ethical and mindful of the campus community’s well-being.
