Selangor To Gather O&G Reps, Economists To Prepare For Energy Crunch

31/03/2026 12:29 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government will gather representatives from the oil and gas industry, economists and financial institutions this Wednesday to formulate a preparedness plan to address a potential energy crisis arising from the situation in West Asia.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the move is crucial to ensure the state government is ready to face both direct and indirect impacts on economic growth stemming from the global turmoil.

“This Wednesday, I will bring together representatives from the oil and gas sector, economists, as well as representatives from banks and other sectors, so that the state government can be prepared to face an energy crisis that will have both direct and indirect effects on our economic growth,” he said when officiating the reopening of the Ampang Lookout Point (ALOP) here today.

Amirudin said the energy crisis is a new challenge that must be faced collectively, noting that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is also scheduled to convene all Menteris Besar and Chief Ministers this Thursday to develop a framework and action plan to address the issue.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Amirudin said he has instructed relevant state authorities to prepare a framework on implementing work-from-home (WFH) arrangements for state civil servants.

He said the state government will review two key presentations this week before finalising decisions at the upcoming State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting.

“The key objective of the WFH arrangement is to reduce pressure on fuel consumption, which is heavily driven by vehicle usage.

“We are currently assessing two aspects, productivity and fuel consumption pressure. Although we have not yet reached the level of a fuel supply crisis or disaster as seen in some neighbouring countries, we need to be prepared with the right data and figures to address the situation,” he said.

On the reopening of ALOP, Amirudin said it reflects the state government’s commitment to developing an inclusive and sustainable tourism industry that contributes to the local economy.

He said the project not only provides a recreational space but also serves as a platform to empower local entrepreneurs and preserve natural heritage.

“Many memories have been created here, and today we have the opportunity to create new ones that are more meaningful, safer and more sustainable for future generations,” he said.

He added that all development undertaken by the state government went through careful planning to ensure a balance between physical progress and ecosystem conservation.
