Royal Institution A Pillar Of National Stability -- Annuar Zaini

KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 (Bernama) -- The royal institution is not merely symbolic but serves as a key pillar of national stability, ensuring governance remains anchored in integrity and sound administration, said former Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini.

He said the institution also functions as a check-and-balance mechanism to ensure the country’s administration remains on the right track.

Mohd Annuar said this role is reflected through pre-decision audiences held before matters are tabled at the Cabinet or State Executive Council (Exco) levels.

Citing his experience, he said he had the opportunity to hear insights shared by the Raja of Perlis, who, when serving as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, held weekly audiences with the prime minister to review Cabinet documents.

“During these sessions, the King would examine Cabinet papers and seek detailed explanations on matters presented,” he said.

He said similar practices are observed at the state level, including in Perak, where the Sultan meets the Menteri Besar before Exco meetings.

“This allows the palace to advise, raise concerns or request further clarification to ensure decisions are thoroughly considered before proceeding,” he added.

Mohd Annuar said the institution’s stabilising role was evident during several political crises, including the 2008 Perak constitutional crisis.

He said its role continued after the 14th General Election (GE14) in ensuring a smooth transition of power.

“The institution also played a crucial role in resolving the post-GE15 hung Parliament in 2022, including through the formation of a unity government,” he said.

He added that these episodes underscore the royal institution’s position as an effective final check-and-balance in resolving political deadlocks.
