Malaysian Parliament Celebrates Women’s Day, Strengthens Women’s Role In Democracy

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Parliament continues its commitment to strengthening the role of women as a catalyst for the maturity of the nation’s democracy through a Parliament-level International Women’s Day celebration held today.

According to a statement issued by Malaysian Parliament, themed ‘Wanita Mematangkan Demokrasi’ (Women Shaping a Mature Democracy) the event was held at the Banquet Hall, Main Block, Parliament, in collaboration with the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on Sustainable Development Goals (APPGM-SDG), the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on Gender Equality (APPGM-GE), Yayasan Hasanah and the Ministry of Finance.

“This programme reflects Malaysian Parliament’s continued commitment to strengthening the role of women as a catalyst for the maturity of the country’s democratic institutions, in line with efforts to promote inclusive participation of women at various levels of policymaking and national governance,” the statement said.

The programme also connects grassroots women leaders directly to the national policymaking ecosystem, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.5, which emphasises the full participation of women in leadership.

The event was officiated by Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, who also launched a best practices book titled ‘From Ground to Greatness: Malaysian Grassroots Transformations Under APPGM-SDG’.

In her speech, she emphasised the importance of empowering women’s roles in leadership and national policymaking, while calling on all parties to continue working together to expand women’s participation at all levels.
