PUTRAJAYA, April 8 (Bernama) -- Cloud seeding operations (OPA) carried out yesterday were deemed successful, with data from observation stations and the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s MyRAE system showing significant rainfall distribution in two states, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee (JPBP), said that in Perlis, rainfall recorded between 10 millimetres (mm) and 45 mm from 7 pm to 8 pm, while in Kedah, readings ranged from 6 mm to 57.4 mm from 7 pm to 10 pm.
“This success proves that the implementation of OPA under suitable atmospheric conditions is highly effective in addressing water shortages in critical catchment areas.
“It is an intervention measure to increase rainfall distribution in dam catchment areas affected by dry weather and lack of rainfall in recent weeks,” he said in a statement today.
The OPA focused on 11 major dams under alert, warning and critical categories involving three northern states - Perak, Kedah and Perlis - as well as one area in southern Peninsular Malaysia, Johor, from April 6 to 8.
He said the operations will continue today, targeting the catchment areas of Temenggor and Bukit Merah dams in Perak.
On yesterday’s operations, which targeted the catchment areas of Muda, Pedu and Ahning dams in Kedah and Timah Tasoh dam in Perlis, Ahmad Zahid said the technique used involved dispersing salt solutions into towering cumulus cloud formations using a C130 Hercules aircraft belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
“During the operation, meteorological analysis indicated the presence of highly active convective and towering cumulus clouds in the target areas.
“The effectiveness of the operation was further supported by high atmospheric moisture content and unstable atmospheric conditions, which technically enhance the development of rain clouds following the seeding process,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said such integrated efforts demonstrate that preparedness, science-based actions and continuous initiatives can serve as key defences in addressing climate change and weather uncertainties.
He also assured that the government will continue to strengthen such proactive approaches to safeguard water supply security, public well-being and the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
