Airstrikes Hit Central Beirut As Israel Continues Attacks In Lebanon

08/04/2026 09:40 PM

BEIRUT, April 8 (Bernama-dpa) -- Airstrikes targeted central Beirut on Wednesday, as Israeli attacks in Lebanon continued hours after the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States (US) and Iran, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Residents were seen running in the streets for shelter in the fiercest strikes on central Beirut since the latest outbreak of hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia.

The area was hit without warning, a dpa reporter in the Lebanese capital said. Hospitals were calling on residents to donate blood.

Iran and the US agreed on a two-week ceasefire and the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz overnight under a last-ditch deal to avert a massive wave of strikes threatened by US President Donald Trump.

The agreement, brokered by Pakistan, has received praise from politicians across the world, but concern remains over the situation in Lebanon.

The Israeli military has announced a halt to attacks on Iranian targets, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Lebanon is not included in the ceasefire.
