KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) has proposed that the Skim Pengembara under the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) be expanded to Malaysians working abroad, including in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Dubai.

Its president,Norsyahrin Hamidon said the scheme is crucial to protect cross-border workers who are exposed to various daily risks.

“DPMM also supports the implementation of the scheme, which is expected to provide protection to more than 400,000 Malaysians, particularly those commuting to Singapore,” he said in a statement today.

He said the matter was discussed during a meeting with Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, including proposals related to upskilling and reskilling programmes for gig sector workers as well as protection for gig economy operators.

According to him, the approach taken by the Ministry of Human Resources in focusing on the implementation of high-impact policies within the first 100 days of the minister  taking over the portfolio reflects a commitment to strengthening workers’ welfare.

Norsyahrin said DPMM is ready to work closely with the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) to ensure that each initiative is implemented effectively and delivers direct benefits to the people.

The Skim Pengembara introduced by PERKESO aims to provide social protection to Malaysian workers commuting to Singapore, with its implementation expected to begin in the second quarter of this year.

Yesterday, Ramanan was reported as saying that the government will strengthen strategic cooperation with DPMM in efforts to empower the local workforce and improve access to training facilities for the Malay entrepreneurial community.
