KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 (Bernama) -- The crops subsector continued to be the largest contributor to agricultural sector income in several states, according to the 2024 Agricultural Census Report released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) today.
DOSM reported that PAHANG recorded agricultural sector income totalling RM27.12 billion in 2023, with the crops subsector contributing the largest share at RM24.05 billion or 88.7 per cent of the total income.
Other contributing subsectors were livestock with RM1.23 billion (4.5 per cent), capture fisheries RM0.90 billion (3.3 per cent), forestry and logging RM0.64 billion (2.4 per cent) and aquaculture RM0.29 billion (1.1 per cent).
The three administrative districts recording the highest income were Rompin at RM4.83 billion, Cameron Highlands (RM4.64 billion) and Kuantan (RM2.86 billion).
Meanwhile, the agricultural sector in KEDAH continues to play an important role as a pillar of national food security and a significant contributor to the state economy.
The planted area in the state covered 419,392.1 hectares, with padi remaining the main crop at 228,963.4 hectares, followed by rubber (88,228.3 hectares), oil palm (86,719.5 hectares) and fruits (10,341.8 hectares).
“Kedah recorded 129,231 agricultural holdings involving both individual and organisational farming. The census findings also recorded total sales value for the crops subsector at RM3.96 billion, livestock (RM1.74 billion) and capture fisheries (RM1.47 billion),” according to the department.
According to DOSM, the three districts recording the highest agricultural income in the state were Kubang Pasu at RM1.96 billion, followed by Kuala Muda (RM1.52 billion) and Kota Setar (RM1.07 billion).
PERAK recorded agricultural sector income totalling RM17.69 billion in 2023, with the crops subsector as the largest contributor at RM9.34 billion or 52.8 per cent.
This was followed by livestock at RM4.76 billion (26.9 per cent), capture fisheries RM2.52 billion (14.2 per cent), aquaculture RM929.13 million (5.3 per cent) and forestry and logging RM143.17 million (0.8 per cent).
The three districts recording the highest income in Perak were Manjung at RM3,045.51 million, Batang Padang (RM2,235.37 million) and Larut and Matang (RM2,054.69 million).
In PENANG, a total of 13,713 agricultural holdings were recorded, with 91.6 per cent comprising individual holdings and 8.4 per cent organisational holdings.
According to DOSM, 10,158 holdings were recorded in the crops subsector, with 9,529 of them being individual holdings.
There are 2,427 individual holdings in the capture fisheries subsector in Penang , followed by livestock (543), aquaculture (138) and forestry and logging (two).
In terms of sales value, the livestock subsector recorded the highest at RM1.55 billion, followed by crops RM848.65 million, aquaculture RM603.68 million and capture fisheries RM514.55 million.
The three districts contributing the highest agricultural income were Seberang Perai Selatan (RM1.86 billion), followed by Seberang Perai Tengah (RM752.81 million) and Barat Daya (RM612.16 million).
In KELANTAN, the agricultural sector recorded total income of RM7.84 billion in 2023, with the crops subsector contributing RM6.65 billion or 84.8 per cent, followed by capture fisheries (RM509.43 million), livestock (RM319.82 million), forestry and logging (RM302.68 million) and aquaculture (RM59.23 million).
“The three districts contributing the highest income to Kelantan’s agricultural sector were led by Gua Musang at RM2.54 billion, followed by Kuala Krai (RM1.08 billion) and Kecil Lojing (RM839.69 million),” said the DOSM.
Kelantan also recorded 88,039 agricultural holdings, with 87,597 or 99.5 per cent comprising individual holdings, while 442 holdings were managed by organisations.
In TERENGGANU, the agricultural sector generated RM5.98 billion in 2023, with the crops subsector contributing RM4.55 billion or 76 per cent.
The capture fisheries subsector was the second largest contributor at RM465.51 million (7.8 per cent), followed by livestock RM422.51 million (7.1 per cent), forestry and logging RM295.45 million (4.9 per cent) and aquaculture RM254.59 million (4.2 per cent).
Agricultural holdings managed by organisations contributed RM4.07 billion (68 per cent) of Terengganu’s total agricultural income, while individual holdings recorded RM1.92 billion (32 per cent).
“A total of 97,114 individuals were involved in Terengganu’s agricultural sector in 2023, with Kemaman recording the highest number at 16,891. The average annual salary and wages in the sector stood at RM17,373,” it said.
NEGERI SEMBILAN recorded agricultural income of RM11.22 billion in 2023, with the livestock subsector as the largest contributor at RM5.63 billion (50.2 per cent), followed by crops RM5.43 billion (48.4 per cent).
The three administrative districts recording the highest income were Tampin (RM4.17 billion), followed by Jempol (RM2.25 billion) and Kuala Pilah (RM1.39 billion), while organisational holdings contributed RM9.29 billion (82.8 per cent) and individual holdings RM1.93 billion (17.2 per cent).
In MELAKA, the agricultural sector recorded income of RM5.34 billion in 2023, with the livestock subsector contributing RM3.42 billion or 64 per cent, followed by crops RM1.83 billion, capture fisheries (RM46.66 million), aquaculture (RM40.77 million) and forestry and logging (RM449,000).
DOSM reported that agricultural holdings managed by organisations contributed RM4.76 billion, while individual holdings recorded RM574.96 million.
Melaka also recorded 13,820 agricultural holdings, with 94.2 per cent or 13,018 comprising individual holdings, while 802 holdings were managed by organisations.
PERLIS recorded agricultural sector income totalling RM828.57 million in 2023, with the crops subsector contributing RM520.42 million or 62.8 per cent.
“This was followed by capture fisheries at RM183.48 million (22.1 per cent), livestock RM90.41 million (10.9 per cent), forestry and logging RM27.55 million (3.3 per cent) and aquaculture RM6.72 million (0.8 per cent),” it said.
The agricultural workforce in Perlis stood at 24,224, with padi planting as the largest contributor (18,309), followed by fruits (5,254) and rubber (4,751), while the average annual salary and wages amounted to RM17,467.
