Singapore President’s Mother Passes Away At 99

SINGAPORE, April 20 (Bernama) -- The mother of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Sarvambikai Shanmugaratnam, passed away at the age of 99 on Sunday in the late afternoon, the President’s Office said.

The President’s Office confirmed her death on Monday, stating that she was “cremated soon after in a private observance”, The Straits Times reported.

“We ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this time,” the office said.

According to an obituary published on the Obits.sg portal, Sarvambikai was born on July 5, 1926, in Kuala Lumpur and was married to the late Prof Kanagaratnam Shanmugaratnam, who passed away in 2018.

She is survived by three children, four grandchildren and two sisters.
