Fahmi Expresses Condolences To Family Of Late Joseph Bingkasan

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 (Bernama) -- Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his condolences to the family of former editorial head of the New Straits Times (NST) for Sabah and Sarawak, Joseph Bingkasan who died early today.

Fahmi said he was deeply saddened by Joseph’s passing, describing him as a media practitioner who made significant contributions to the country’s journalism industry, particularly in strengthening the editorial landscape in Sabah and Sarawak.

“My condolences to the entire family. May they be granted strength and resilience in facing this loss,” he said in a Facebook post.

Fahmi also noted that Joseph was among the recipients of the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA aid in 2023.

Joseph died at 3.56 am at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, believed to be due to cancer. He was 71.

He had extensive experience in journalism, beginning as a sub-editor with the Kinabalu Sabah Times in 1977 before joining New Straits Times Press (NSTP) as a correspondent in Sabah.

He also served at Times of Malaysia London Ltd, the NST office in London, before being appointed editorial head of NST Sabah and Sarawak based in Kuching. He also previously worked with Sabah’s local newspaper, the Daily Express.
