KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- Local defence company, Maruss Sdn Bhd, is offering an innovative solution to modernise ageing firearms such as the M16A1 rifle and MP5 submachine gun at significantly lower cost.
The initiative can enhance the capabilities of security forces while expanding existing inventories, with cost savings of up to 50 per cent compared with procuring new weapons.
Managing director Syafiq Razi said the upgrade programme aligns with the government’s goal of building a more self-reliant defence industry.
He said the M16A1 upgrade involves converting the gas-operated system to a piston mechanism, along with improvements to the barrel.
“This allows the weapon to operate in ‘two environments’, meaning it can function effectively even immediately after being submerged in water. We also install a heavy-duty barrel with a special internal coating that supports various ammunition types without compromising durability,” he told Bernama when met at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2026 exhibition here today.
According to Syafiq, the upgrades also enable the installation of modern accessory systems such as Picatinny rails and M-Lok, allowing integration of equipment like night-vision sniperscope and laser devices depending on operational needs.
The M16A1 has been widely used by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) since the late 1960s and early 1970s.
On production capacity, Syafiq said the first phase of Maruss’ manufacturing facility is complete, with operations expected to begin as early as the second quarter of this year.
The plant will focus on producing small-arms ammunition, including 9mm rounds and rifle ammunition of various grades.
“For phase one, our machines can produce between 12 and 15 million rounds per eight-hour shift. Running three shifts over 24 hours would raise output to between 36 and 45 million,” he said.
Syafiq said Maruss has also signed a memorandum of understanding with SwissP Defence AG to produce high-performance ammunition in Malaysia through technology transfer.
The partnership is expected to mark a significant step for the local defence industry, with plans to develop products under a “Made in Malaysia, with SwissP technology” model while strengthening knowledge sharing and potential exclusive rights for advanced ammunition components.
