KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- NCT Group of Companies (NCT) marked Earth Day with a Mangrove Tree Planting Programme at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park recently, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship.
NCT in a statement said the programme, organised in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society, supports coastal restoration and climate resilience through the rehabilitation of degraded mangrove ecosystems.
A total of 80 participants, comprising employees and their family members, took part in the programme, planting 320 mangrove saplings.
“The initiative also reflected the Social dimension of NCT’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitment by creating opportunities for employee and family engagement through a meaningful shared activity.
“By involving families, the programme not only helped restore fragile coastal environments, but also strengthened bonds among participants, fostered environmental awareness across generations and nurtured a shared sense of responsibility towards community and nature,” the statement read.
NCT said the activities began with an educational session on the ecological importance of mangroves, followed by a guided planting exercise, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of mangroves’ role in protecting coastlines from erosion, supporting biodiversity and acting as efficient natural carbon sinks.
Founder and Group Managing Director Datuk Seri Yap Ngan Choy said the group remained committed to translating its sustainability goals into tangible actions.
“Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond intent, it is reflected in the actions we take to protect and restore the environment. Through initiatives such as this mangrove planting programme, we are contributing to nature-based climate solutions while fostering a culture of responsibility among our people and communities,” he said.
According to the statement, mangroves are recognised for their high carbon sequestration capacity, absorbing approximately four to five times more carbon dioxide than tropical forests, with NCT contributing to Climate Action (SDG 13) and marine ecosystem preservation under Life Below Water (SDG 14) through the initiative.
It said the collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society also highlighted NCT’s commitment to Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17), emphasising the importance of cross-sector cooperation in advancing sustainable development.
The programme forms part of NCT’s broader ESG Roadmap, guided by a dedicated ESG Task Force and Sustainability Committee, anchored on three pillars, namely Empowering Communities, Protecting the Environment and Promoting Inclusive Growth.
“As a purpose-driven developer, NCT continues to create lasting value that goes beyond development, placing equal emphasis on environmental stewardship, community wellbeing and sustainable growth,” it added.
