Majority Of Melaka Littering Cases Involve Cigarette Butts - SWCorp

MELAKA, April 30 (Bernama) -- About 90 per cent of the 425 Notices of Offence (NPK) issued in Melaka were for littering cigarette butts in public areas.

State Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director Nor Zaki Md Nor said the notices were issued through 353 enforcement operations conducted across the state from the beginning of the year until yesterday.

“The remaining cases involved the disposal of plastic waste, food containers and drink bottles, with most notices issued at public hotspots, particularly in tourist areas.

“A total of 27 cases have been convicted by the court, while nine individuals failed to appear for case mention,” he told reporters at a Community Service Order (PKM) programme at Pulau Melaka here today.

He added that arrest warrants have been issued for those who failed to attend court, reflecting the seriousness of the offences as they involve legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the state’s first PKM implementation involved four individuals aged between 23 and 40, who carried out cleaning work in the area.

Three were ordered by the court to complete 12 hours of service, while one was assigned four hours

“Each session lasts four hours. One individual completed the full sentence today, while the remaining three will complete theirs in subsequent sessions,” he said.

He also advised the public to maintain cleanliness by disposing waste in designated bins or keeping it temporarily if no bins are available.

“Awareness efforts have long been implemented, but enforcement will now be intensified to ensure public cleanliness is consistently maintained,” he said.
