LEIPZIG (Germany), May 6 (Bernama-dpa) -- RB Leipzig will wear black armbands during their Bundesliga match against St Pauli on Saturday in remembrance of the victims of a deadly car-ramming attack in the eastern German city of Leipzig, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
"The events in Leipzig's city centre on Monday left us deeply shocked. Our thoughts are with the victims, as well as their families, loved ones, and everyone affected by this horrific attack," the club said on the social media platform X on Wednesday.
The under-19 team will also participate in the initiative. A moment of silence will be observed before kick-off at each match.
"RB Leipzig is thus sending a collective, silent message of sympathy and solidarity with our city," the club said.
According to preliminary findings, a 33-year-old man drove a vehicle into a pedestrian shopping street in central Leipzig on Monday.
Several people were struck by the car before it came to a stop, with the driver surrendering to police without resistance while still inside the vehicle.
A total of six people aged 21 to 87 were hit, Leipzig police said.
A 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man were killed, while a woman and a man, aged 84 and 75 respectively, sustained serious injuries.
