SIBU, May 8 (Bernama) -- National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has described Sarawak as a model of successful inclusive development built on unity, ethnic harmony and social cohesion.
He said findings from the 2025 National Unity Index (IPNas) showed Sarawak recorded the highest score in the country at 0.791, reflecting the state’s strong and resilient foundation of unity.
“This is the result of a community culture that emphasises togetherness and mutual respect. This success should serve as a reference point in strengthening unity at the national level,” he said when officiating the Kanowit Cultural Festival 2026 Series 1 at Kanowit Waterfront, today.
He said the inaugural festival focuses on preserving and strengthening ethnic customs and heritage, while also boosting the socio-economic development of local communities through the sale of local products and the promotion of social unity.
The festival, which runs from today until May 31, features various programmes including the Gawai Bazaar, the Niti Daun programme (Gawai Day parade), Betaboh and Ngajat competitions, as well as the Pekit Kumang contest.
Aaron also expressed hope that the festival would be included in the official calendar of the Sarawak Tourism Board as an iconic event for Kanowit, alongside the annual Kanowit Festival held every October.
Earlier, the minister took part in the Niti Daun programme in Kanowit, which was held in conjunction with the start of the Gawai celebration and drew participation from various ethnic communities, including the Iban, Malay, Chinese, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu.
A total of 36 contingents joined the parade around Kanowit town, showcasing colourful traditional costumes and cultural dance performances representing various ethnic groups, reflecting the spirit of unity and harmony among Sarawak’s multiracial communities.
