Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Strikes Eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, May 15 (Bernama) -- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Tanimbar Islands in eastern Indonesia early Friday, with tremors felt in several areas, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG said on its website that the earthquake occurred at 12.53 am local time, with its epicentre located in the sea about 225 kilometres north of Tanimbar.

The agency said the quake was recorded at coordinates 6.09 degrees South Latitude and 130.56 degrees East Longitude, at a depth of 163 kilometres.

BMKG said the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning.

The agency also urged residents to remain cautious of possible aftershocks.
