Sibu First Catholic Bishop Dominic Su Dies At 87

SIBU, May 15 (Bernama) -- Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su Haw Chiu, the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sibu, passed away at 9.52 am today at the age of 87.

In a statement today, the Diocese of Sibu said Dominic Su was born on May 26, 1939 and was ordained a priest on Dec 4, 1969.

He was appointed the first Bishop of Sibu on Dec 22, 1986, before being consecrated bishop on Jan 6, 1987, by Saint Pope John Paul II and officially installed on Feb 11, 1987.

“He faithfully led the Diocese until his retirement on Dec 24, 2011, after which he was succeeded by Bishop Joseph Hii Teck Kwong,” the statement said.

The Diocese described Su as a devoted and humble spiritual leader whose life and ministry had been a lasting blessing to the churches in Sibu and beyond.

He will be laid to rest at Nirvana Memorial Park at Jalan Oya here tomorrow.
