JASIN, May 16 (Bernama) -- Melaka has become the pioneering state in the implementation of the QR (quick response) Code Tagging System for Livestock to modernise livestock management and regulation through the use of digital technology.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the implementation of the initiative proves that the livestock sector can also keep pace with the digital revolution and smart technology, thereby leaving behind traditional management methods.
"The state government no longer wants the traditional method of livestock management to be used, where livestock is left to roam freely and pose a risk of causing road accidents ... there have also been fatal accidents, but the authorities are unable to identify the owners of the livestock involved.
"With this implementation, it can also ensure that livestock owners are more responsible in controlling the movement of their livestock," he said to reporters after launching the programme in Lembah Kesang, Seri Mendapat here today.
Also present were Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and State Veterinary Services Department (JPV) director Dr Mariati Daud Gan.
Commenting further, Ab Rauf said the QR Tagging system was developed by the Melaka JPV to ensure that each livestock has a unique and permanent digital identification in the official database.
"The installation of these QR tags is provided free of charge until the end of 2026, with the state government allocating RM300,000 for the implementation of this initiative. Starting in early 2027, a fee of RM5 will be charged for each livestock QR tag installation," he said.
Ab Rauf also said the state government will also review the amendments to the local authority by-laws related to livestock management to ensure the implementation of the system can be enforced in a more orderly and effective manner.
He added that Melaka hopes that the initiative can serve as a reference model at the national level in developing a more modern and systematic livestock control and management system.
