SIBU, May 16 (Bernama) -- Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today called on Sarawak-based parties under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to remain united in safeguarding the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and ensuring Sarawak’s continued political stability and economic progress.
Officiating the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Triennial General Assembly (TGA) 2026 here, he said Sarawak’s political unity had enabled the state to play a decisive role in determining the country’s leadership during periods of political uncertainty at the federal level.
“When politics is volatile, the component that is united will determine the future of Malaysia. If Sarawak’s voice is to be heard, Sarawak must remain united,” he said.
Abang Johari, who is also GPS chairman, said the coalition’s component parties had consistently prioritised Sarawak’s interests and continued to pursue matters agreed upon under MA63.
“We do not want more, we do not want less, but we want them to comply with what has been agreed by our forefathers,” he said.
He said Sarawak’s strong and stable administration had also enabled the state government to implement various long-term development initiatives, including free tertiary education, renewable energy expansion, digital transformation and hydrogen development.
According to him, Sarawak’s strong fiscal position had allowed the state to introduce people-centric policies, including free tertiary education for Sarawakian students at state-owned higher learning institutions.
“Today, as long as your children enter university, there is no more financial problem. You don’t have to pay because GPS is paying for you,” he said.
On future development, the Premier said Sarawak was now focusing on emerging sectors such as hydrogen energy, aerospace, artificial intelligence (AI), satellite technology, and the digital economy to prepare the younger generation for future industries.
“The future of Sarawak is there. Our policy is there. We must prepare our younger generation for a better future,” he added.
