IPOH, May 17 (Bernama) -- Kolej Komuniti Pasir Salak has successfully collected over 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kg) of electronic waste through its Environmental Sustainability Programme: E-Waste Collection, held in Kampung Gajah, near Pasir Salak, yesterday.
In a statement today, the college announced that the initiative, run in collaboration with Masjid Jamek Al Ansar Changkat Lada, SRT Teck Realistic Sdn Bhd, and strategic partners, took place on the mosque grounds.
The programme drew an enthusiastic response from the community and residents from Setiawan, Lekir, Kuala Kangsar, Parit, Teluk Intan and Chenderong Balai, who turned up with a wide range of broken electrical and electronic items for safe, eco-friendly disposal and recycling.
Collected items included televisions, washing machines, computers, mobile phones, printers, fans, cables, electric kettles and various other discarded household appliances.
"This programme reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening public awareness on responsible e-waste management while embedding green practices into daily life," said college director Mohd Shahrir Ahmad Zaini.
Mohd Shahrir said programmes like this not only have a positive impact on the environment but also strengthen ties between educational institutions and the community through sustainability-focused activities.
"Such programmes help reduce environmental pollution while educating the public on safer, more systematic and sustainable methods of e-waste disposal," he said in the statement.
He added that the programme also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), through responsible recycling and e-waste disposal practices.
The programme further upholds SDG 13 (Climate Action) in efforts to reduce pollution and minimise negative environmental impacts, ensuring the well-being of future generations.
Meanwhile, programme director Norjunainah Juri said in the same statement that the successful collection of over 3.5 tonnes of e-waste within a short period was the result of close cooperation between the local community, relevant agencies and dedicated volunteers committed to advancing the environmental sustainability agenda.
She said the programme also supports the 2026 vision of Politeknik and Kolej Komuniti director general Dr Shamsuri Abdullah, which focuses on strengthening green culture through a comprehensive sustainability agenda within the POLYCC (Polytechnics and Community Colleges) ecosystem this year.
She noted that this initiative emphasises green technology-based education, empowering sustainable innovation among the POLYCC community, and implementing the SmartGreen agenda to produce a skilled, competitive green-collar workforce that is environmentally conscious.
Meanwhile, Masjid Jamek Al Ansar Changkat Lada deputy chairman Idris Mohamed Yasin, described the programme as an excellent initiative for educating the community to be more responsible in caring for the environment.
He said collaboration between educational institutions, mosques, industry players and the local community can foster a more environmentally conscious society.
"Programmes like this bring great benefit to the community, not only by helping to clean up the environment but also by raising public awareness on the importance of proper e-waste disposal for the sake of future generations," he said.
