KUCHING, June 13 (Bernama) -- Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) is targeting up to 5,000 students from Sarawak to enrol in Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM) and Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) this year, following a significant increase in applications from the state in recent years.
Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said the rise in applications from Sarawakian students has been highly encouraging, reflecting the effectiveness of the Higher Education Tours (HITS), which is organised annually to promote the study opportunities offered by KPTM and UPTM.
“This year, we expect between 4,000 and 5,000 students from Sarawak to enrol in KPTM and UPTM.
“Last year, applications exceeded 1,800, and as of June this year, we have received 1,010 applications for KPTM,” she told reporters after officiating the HITS Sarawak 2026 programme here today.
According to Rubiah, the increase has also prompted the institutions to plan the establishment of a campus in Sarawak to improve access to higher education for local students.
“KPTM is currently undergoing the necessary processes and procedures to commence operations in Sarawak, to attract more students from the state to pursue the programmes it offers,” she said.
She said that, in an effort to further expand benefits for Sarawakian students, MARA has established a collaboration with Yayasan Sarawak to enable students enrolled at KPTM and UPTM to enjoy facilities and assistance previously made available to Sarawakian students at other higher education institutions.
“Today, we launched this collaboration, which will allow Sarawakian students at KPTM and UPTM to apply for various incentives provided by the state government, subject to eligibility requirements.
“Among the benefits available are flight ticket assistance, book vouchers and laptop vouchers, thereby providing greater support to Sarawakian students pursuing their studies at MARA institutions,” she said.
