MACC, TI Strengthen Cooperation To Combat Corruption

PUTRAJAYA, June 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) continues to strengthen its strategic cooperation with Transparency International (TI) in efforts to enhance governance, integrity, transparency and the anti-corruption agenda at both the national and global levels.

In a statement today, MACC said the commitment was reflected through a courtesy call by TI chair François Valerian on MACC deputy chief commissioner (Prevention) Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman at the commission's headquarters here yesterday.

MACC said Azmi expressed appreciation for the good relationship established with TI and reaffirmed the commission's commitment to strengthening cooperation in promoting good governance, integrity, transparency and anti-corruption initiatives.

"MACC is committed to expanding existing cooperation and exploring new areas of collaboration that can contribute to strengthening the integrity system," the statement said.

According to MACC, Azmi also said that through its National Governance Planning Division, the commission serves as the main secretariat of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) Special Task Force.

He said that through the special task force and six CPI focus groups, MACC works closely with ministries, government agencies, academic institutions, the private sector and civil society organisations to identify factors affecting Malaysia's CPI performance.

MACC said Malaysia's CPI score for 2025 improved by two points from 50 to 52, while the country's ranking rose three places from 57th to 54th globally.

Meanwhile, Valerian said improvements in CPI scores could be achieved through effective preventive approaches and consistent enforcement action.

He said TI welcomed cooperation with anti-corruption agencies in helping to improve a country's CPI performance.

According to him, anti-corruption agencies should be empowered with adequate financial resources and human capital, and remain free from political influence to ensure the effectiveness of their functions and roles.

He also welcomed Malaysia's target of being among the top 25 countries in the world in the CPI rankings by 2030.
