PUTRAJAYA, June 19 (Bernama) -- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is expanding its academic cooperation with Uzbekistan through two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) that are expected to create greater opportunities for student mobility, academic exchanges and research on Islamic civilisation between the two countries.

UKM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Sufian Jusoh said the MoUs involve the renewal of cooperation with the Islamic Civilisation Centre in Uzbekistan (ICCU) as well as a new collaboration with the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Centre for a period of five years.

He said the cooperation will focus on student mobility programmes, academic exchanges, joint research and research attachments.

He said the move would not only strengthen Malaysia-Uzbekistan academic ties but also expand opportunities for international student exchanges and the sharing of expertise in Islamic scholarship.

"This academic cooperation not only elevates Islamic scholarship on the global stage, but also opens up broad opportunities for UKM and institutions in Uzbekistan to explore innovation in cross-disciplinary research relevant to contemporary challenges," he said in a statement here today.

The MoUs were signed during a visit on June 16 by a UKM delegation, which also toured the ICCU gallery to view its collection of manuscripts and historical treasures of Islamic civilisation from Central Asia.

The visit also provided UKM with exposure to the practical application of digital technology and artificial intelligence in preserving, analysing and promoting world heritage and historical legacies in the modern era.

UKM also held a meeting with the head of the Higher Education Institutions Department at Uzbekistan's Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Mamanazarov Abdusamat Abdusaitovich.
