IPOH, June 19 (Bernama) -- Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and the National Institute of Land and Survey (INSTUN) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen the use of drone technology in campus management and monitoring.
UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said the MoU supports the university's efforts to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen the geospatial competencies of the campus community.
He said the strategic collaboration would enable the university to leverage INSTUN's expertise in surveying, mapping and geospatial technology to expand the use of drones in various aspects of campus management.
“The use of drone technology is seen as capable of enhancing the efficiency of monitoring the vast campus area, while reducing reliance on security personnel to carry out certain surveillance tasks in a faster and more effective manner.
“UPSI views the use of drone technology as an approach that can improve the efficiency of campus monitoring, while helping to reduce reliance on security personnel for certain tasks,” he said in a statement tonight.
The MoU signing ceremony was held at UPSI's Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus today.
Md Amin said the collaboration would also provide staff and students with training and exposure to emerging technologies, while expanding cooperation in geospatial research, geographic information systems (GIS), digital mapping, land management and human capital development through training programmes, expertise-sharing and staff mobility.
Meanwhile, INSTUN director Khairin Nazry Karim said the collaboration reflected both institutions' commitment to advancing drone technology and geospatial competencies through professional training, expertise-sharing and impactful programmes aimed at strengthening the country's human capital.
He expressed confidence that the strategic partnership would create more opportunities for innovation in drone, mapping and geospatial technologies, while supporting the nation's demand for a highly skilled workforce in these fields.
