MELAKA, June 21 (Bernama) -- The success of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) Programme should not be measured by the number of initiatives implemented, but by its effectiveness in addressing the people’s issues and improving their well-being, said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.
He said the WRUR approach emphasises resolving issues at grassroots level by ensuring that every complaint from the people is heard, recorded and addressed, regardless of background or location.
“The WRUR initiative, implemented in 19 state constituencies so far, has recorded about 4,027 complaints from the public, of which 2,633, or more than 65 per cent, have been successfully resolved,” he said.
Ab Rauf said this in his speech at the closing ceremony of the WRUR programme for the Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency in Telok Mas here last night. Also present was State Tourism, Heritage, Arts, and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman.
He said the achievement reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring that every issue raised by the people is given due attention and addressed.
On the programme, Ab Rauf said Kota Melaka is the third parliamentary constituency to implement WRUR after Alor Gajah and Hang Tuah Jaya.
He said that during the four-week implementation period, more than 500 programmes were successfully carried out across five state constituencies, benefiting more than 200,000 local residents.
“A total of 470 complaints were received during the implementation of WRUR in the Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency, with 31 successfully resolved during the programme, while the rest are being processed according to their priorities.
“More importantly, all complaints received will continue to be addressed even after the programme ends. I have instructed each relevant agency to continue monitoring and resolving the issues raised until the people feel the impact of the actions taken,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abdul Razak said a total of 328 local development projects worth nearly RM68 million have been implemented in the Telok Mas state constituency over the past five years, benefiting residents in 12 areas.
“The projects include upgrading roads, rivers, drainage and sewerage systems, repairing dilapidated houses and constructing new homes, as well as upgrading community halls, places of worship, business centres, sports facilities and schools,” he said.
The Telok Mas assemblyman said during the same period, a total of 6,098 Telok Mas residents benefited from food, welfare and health assistance worth more than RM1.2 million, as well as the distribution of 213 medical beds to those in need.
He said that 70 series of the Jualan Rahmah and Jualan Murah programmes have also been implemented since 2022 to help the people cope with the rising cost of living, while the Free Petrol Programme has benefited about 15,000 residents, with assistance worth RM177,000.
“In education, 1,694 students benefited from the programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination candidates, while 255 excellent Form Five students and students from public higher education institutions received educational incentives worth RM244,200,” he said.
Abdul Razak said several new projects have also been approved to boost the tourism sector in the area, including an allocation of RM2.4 million from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to upgrade tourism facilities in Sungai Punggor and Alai, which is expected to be completed in 2027.
“In addition, an allocation of RM300,000 has been approved to upgrade Dataran Telok Mas into a One-Stop Centre for tourism and local traditional products.
“The Bukit Larang geosite has also been identified as one of the key geosites under the Melaka Geopark and will be assessed for National Geopark recognition this October,” he said.
