WASHINGTON, June 24 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Chinese tech giant Alibaba has filed a lawsuit against the United States (US) Department of War over its designation as a Chinese military company, according to a court filing released on Tuesday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“The determinations have no basis in fact or law … Alibaba is governed by an independent board, none of whom has any military affiliation,” the lawsuit said.
The company argued that its products and services are intended exclusively for retail, logistics, and enterprise information technology purposes.
The firm also said that its contracts and compliance policies explicitly prohibit military use and that it does not possess military certifications or licences.
Earlier in June, the Pentagon announced the addition of 188 companies to a list of entities it considers linked to China's military-industrial complex, including Alibaba, Tencent and BYD.
