TANGKAK, June 29 (Bernama) -- Tangkak incumbent Ee Chin Li is determined to ensure that the long-delayed Tangkak New District Administrative Centre project is fully realised to drive the socioeconomic development of the local community.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate stated his commitment to make the development agenda for the 80.9-hectare gazetted site a reality to improve the delivery of public services and meet the daily needs of residents in the district.

Ee, 44, a University of Taipei graduate, said the integrated development plan will include a government administrative complex, a commercial hub and affordable housing, enabling residents to access government services without having to travel to neighbouring districts.

"If Pakatan Harapan succeeds in forming the new Johor state government, I will ensure that the new Tangkak district administrative centre project is realised, but through a different approach from the one that was previously planned but never implemented," he told Bernama here today after spending time meeting residents at Taman Ria through a door-to-door outreach programme.

He stressed that the administrative hub was crucial to end difficulties faced by rural residents, who currently have to travel to Muar or Jasin, Melaka, to deal with government agencies, and that the proposal is in line with PH's efforts to promote more balanced development across northern and central Johor.

Ee, who joined DAP in 2001, is contesting the Tangkak seat for a fourth consecutive term after first winning it in the 13th General Election (GE13) in 2013, having defended the seat in the last state election with a slim majority of 372 votes in a five-cornered contest, beating candidates from Barisan Nasional (BN), Perikatan Nasional (PN), Pejuang, and an independent candidate.

He pointed out that the area's political harmony is reflected in the healthy relationship between both sides, which practise a mature and professional "kampung-style" political contest.

"We campaign with courtesy and professionalism. We don't want to create unnecessary commotion. That is the most important thing because this is the democracy we practise in Malaysia," he said, as he described his BN challenger, Haw Chin Teck, as a capable lawyer who is also active in non-governmental organisations.

He added that his campaign strategy aligns with PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call for party machinery to work hard and engage voters through door-to-door visits.

Ee is in a straight fight against Haw (BN) for the Tangkak seat, which has 36,955 registered voters, who will cast their ballots on July 11, while early voting is slated for July 7.
