JAKARTA, June 30 (Bernama) -- Indonesia's former education minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment on Tuesday after being found guilty of corruption over the procurement of Chromebook laptops under the country's education digitalisation programme.
The Central Jakarta Corruption Court ruled that Nadiem had abused his authority in the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management systems by the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry between 2019 and 2022, causing state losses of Rp1.56 trillion (Rp1 million = RM227.4).
The court also imposed a Rp1 billion fine, with a substitute prison term of 190 days if unpaid, and ordered Nadiem to pay Rp809.59 billion in restitution or face an additional five years' imprisonment, according to state news agency Antara.
The news agency reported that the court ruled that Nadiem, who founded Indonesian ride-hailing company Gojek before joining the Cabinet, had received Rp809.59 billion through PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa, adding that most of the company's funds originated from a US$786.99 million (US$1 = RM4.06) investment by Google.
The court also found that the offences were committed together with four other individuals, three of whom have been convicted in separate trials, while another suspect remains a fugitive.
The 10-year sentence was lighter than the 18 years' imprisonment, a Rp1 billion fine and Rp5.67 trillion in restitution sought by prosecutors.
