MELAKA UMNO WANTS TO RECAPTURE SUNGAI UDANG STATE SEAT IN GE16

MELAKA, July 15 (Bernama) -- Melaka UMNO is determined to recapture the Sungai Udang state seat and thus completing the regain of the state seats under the Tangga Batu parliamentary constituency seat in the coming 16th general election (GE16).

Melaka UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said therefore the UMNO machinery has been reminded not to be complacent and instead organise and strengthen the party's work to ensure that the mission can be achieved so that UMNO's position after GE-16 can be restored.

"On Dec 20 2026, the Melaka state assembly will dissolve by itself... so we only have about 24 months from now to ensure that we can defend the government that we have today.

"In the 15th Melaka state election, we won in the state seats of Kelebang, Paya Rumput, Pantai Kundor but lost in Sungai Udang, so we have to try to return Sungai Udang to UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) )," he said while opening the 2024 Tangga Batu UMNO division delegates meeting here last night.

The meeting was also attended by UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Melaka UMNO Liaison Committee deputy chairman cum Tangga Batu UMNO division head Datuk Rais Yasin.

He said that although UMNO might face a tough challenge in the upcoming 16th GE, he was confident that the party would be able to recapture the seats it had seized in the 15th GE.

In the 15th Melaka state election, the Sungai Udang state seat was won by Perikatan Nasional represented by Dr Mohd Aleef Yusof with a majority of 530 votes compared to Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad who got 6,259 votes.

Meanwhile, Rais said that by organising a good party machinery to ensure the welfare and comfort of the people in the Tangga Batu parliamentary seat, not only the three state seats under the parliamentary constituency can be retained but also to recapture the Sungai Udang state seat.

He said apart from that, the solidarity and unity among the party machinery should also be given focus because it was the main key that could contribute to the success of UMNO and BN in GE16.

"UMNO has a big task to restore the Malays' trust in UMNO and BN, at the same time our position in this unity government also plays an important role because UMNO has been a pillar for the Malays for a long time.

"The activity of going to the ground to approach the people at the grassroots level has started since last year and it will go on to capture the hearts of the people including the voters among the military personnel involving a total of almost 10,000 people," he said.

Earlier, he said as many as 700 representatives of the three UMNO wings namely Wanita, Youth and Puteri of Tangga Batu attended the division delegates’ meeting .
