MELAKA, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- Melaka state assembly speaker Datuk Ibrahim Durum will hold discussions with state legal officers next week on the 'fate' of Rembia assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis.
Ibrahim, when contacted by Bernama tonight, said this follows Muhammad Jailani's failure to submit an official response within two weeks regarding his recent decision to join PAS.
“The deadline for submitting the official response ended this afternoon... I will hold a meeting next week upon my return from a working visit to Australia on August 8,” he said.
On July 16, PAS secretary-general and Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan confirmed in a press conference at the Parliament building that Muhammad Jailani, who was previously suspended from UMNO, had been accepted as a PAS member on June 10 last year.
Takiyuddin claimed that Muhammad Jailani’s action did not constitute party-hopping, as the Melaka State Constitution Amendment Bill 2023 concerning party-hopping was passed on July 31, 2023, after the Rembia assemblyman had joined PAS.
According to an UMNO Disciplinary Board letter dated Aug 28 last year, Muhammad Jailani was accused of sabotaging the party by intentionally attending a PN candidate announcement event for the Simpang Jeram state by-election in Bakri, Johor.
Muhammad Jailani's UMNO membership was suspended for six years.
