Nenggiri Polls: BN Candidate Promises 'Healing' Touch Through Sports, Recreational Facilities

05/08/2024 05:09 PM

GUA MUSANG, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The construction of sports facilities and recreational areas for young people is among the priorities of Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani if elected as the Nenggiri state assemblyman.

The native of Nenggiri, affectionately known as Awi, said he would strive to establish sports and recreational facilities that cater to the tastes of young people to help relieve stress or provide a means for 'healing.'

"If permitted, that is what I will fight for. We understand the current situation where 'healing' spots for them are quite limited, so specifically in the Nenggiri area, we will work on this," he told reporters in Bertam Baru here today on the third day of the Nenggiri by-election campaign.

The by-election is a straight fight between Mohd Azmawi Fikri and PAS candidate Mohd Rizwadi Ismail, who is a Bersatu member representing Perikatan Nasional.

Considering the suitability of the local area, he said football fields and children's playgrounds with complete infrastructure are necessary and will be prioritised.

"It depends on the needs; some want to play takraw, some want other sports, but certainly, we need to ensure that every community has a place like in other states. For example, every state has a youth community hall or a public hall that is fully equipped.

"Here, it is lacking and not up to the level we see in other states," he said.

He said another focus area includes the development of human capital involving residents in the constituency, which is a basic issue that needs to be addressed first to prevent any problems within the community.

When asked about his Polling District Centre (PDM) focus in the by-election, Awi, who is also the Kelantan UMNO Youth chief, said he would continuously campaign in all areas to win over the voters.

"I have been on the campaign trail after the nomination two days ago, and I need to be realistic. Previously, we were 810 votes negative because BN lost here before, so we need to focus on all the PDMs without leaving any behind," he said.

On June 19, Kelantan State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah declared the Nenggiri seat vacant after its assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim lost his membership in Bersatu on June 13.

The Election Commission has fixed polling for Aug 17.
