KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- The People's Residency Programme (PRR) for the Harmoni MADANI Bestari Jaya project is proof that Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the MADANI government have fulfilled their election promise to address the housing issues affecting plantation workers in Selangor.
Political secretary in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president’s office Manivanan Gowin said workers in five estates were affected, namely Ladang Mary, Ladang Nigel Gardner, Ladang Sungai Tinggi, Ladang Minyak and Ladang Bukit Tagar.
“Each time a General Election (GE) or a by-election takes place, the housing issues of workers in these five estates have always been raised. The same issue was brought up during GE15 in 2022 and the Kuala Kubu Bharu by-election in 2024.
“The PH leadership and the MADANI government have given their commitment to resolve this matter. Today, we can see that the promise made to the people, especially to workers in these five estates, has been honoured,” he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for PRR Harmoni MADANI Bestari Jaya, expressed his hope that the project would become a model for estate-government collaboration in developing workers’ housing.
On May 3 last year, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the longstanding housing problems affecting 245 families across the five plantations in Bestari Jaya, Hulu Selangor, which have persisted for decades, would soon be resolved.
Meanwhile, Manivanan said this breakthrough is only possible through negotiation and cooperation among all parties, as stressed by the Prime Minister.
“Once again, I want to stress that the Prime Minister is committed to continuing his agenda of defending the rights of ordinary citizens, regardless of their religion, race or status.
“The resolution of the plantation workers’ housing issues can only be achieved by a leader with a sincere and honest intention to uplift the lives of marginalised communities,” he added.
PRR Harmoni Madani Bestari Jaya involves the construction of 1,200-square-foot terrace houses, each equipped with three bedrooms and two bathrooms on 8.09 hectares of land owned by Berjaya Corporation Bhd at Ladang Sungai Tinggi and carried out by PR1MA Corporation Malaysia, the appointed implementing agency.
The RM75 million project, expected to be completed within two years, is set to benefit 1,250 residents, including 245 rubber estate settlers from five estates in the Bestari Jaya area.
