I Return To UMNO Without Conditions - Khairy

19/04/2026 12:12 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) -- Former UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin stressed that he returned to the party not with any demands, but rather with the determination to serve and contribute as best he could to strengthen the party.

In fact, Khairy, who is also the former Member of Parliament for Rembau, said he was ready to work with all levels of leadership and the grassroots to restore the people's confidence in the party.

"Hopefully this decision will be a new starting point for us to move forward with greater unity, maturity and credibility," he said in a Facebook post today.

His statement followed the decision of the UMNO Supreme Council (MT) Meeting last night which readmitted more than 6,000 members including several former senior party leaders, including former vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Khairy and former Foreign Minister Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar.

In 2023, UMNO sacked Khairy and its Supreme Council member, Tan Sri Noh Omar, while several other leaders, including Hishammuddin, were suspended from their membership for six years.

However, in March, Khairy expressed his intention to rejoin the party following the announcement by president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that he was "opening the door wide" to former members who had been sacked or suspended.

Khairy said he expressed his highest appreciation and gratitude to Ahmad Zahid for the wisdom and consideration given in accepting his application to return as a party member.

He also expressed his gratitude to all UMNO MT members who had made the decision with wisdom and conviction for the future of the party's struggle.

"I accept this decision with great humility and gratitude, and am aware of the great trust that comes with it.

"The period outside the party has given me space to reflect and improve my weaknesses," he said.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin, through a post on Facebook, also expressed his appreciation to UMNO Supreme Council for lifting his suspension after three years.

“I will continue to fight and serve. Carrying the trust with commitment and principles. Then, Now, Forever,” said the Sembrong Member of Parliament.
