Amman, June 17 (Bernama-Petra)— Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced that 14 Jordanian pilgrims died and 17 others were missing while performing the hajj ritual, Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported.
Head of the Directorate of Operations and Consular Affairs, Ambassador Sufian Qudah said the ministry is coordinating with the relevant Saudi authorities on the procedures for burying pilgrims and transporting the bodies of those whose families wish to have their remains transferred to the Kingdom as soon as possible.
“In addition, they are following up on the search for the 17 pilgrims who went missing,” he said on Sunday.
Qudah expressed his sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased pilgrims.
According to Ambassador Qudah, the deceased and missing pilgrims are not part of the official Jordanian hajj delegation.
Meanwhile, spokesman for the Saudi Health Ministry, Mohammed Al-Abdulaali said the cases of heat stress and sunstroke amounted to 2,764 due to the high temperatures in the holy sites and exposure to the sun during its peak intensity from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
He emphasised that the failure to use umbrellas or drink water regularly contributed to these cases.
Al-Abdulaali stated that the Health Ministry is closely monitoring the affected individuals and wishes them a speedy recovery.
